Sensory Overload: Simon in Melbourne for Melbourne International Coffee Expo

Back to blog

17 April 2018

To celebrate ten years with Emporio Coffee, Simon Maguire spent a week in Melbourne including time at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo, MICE.

Simon returned to Wellington excited and inspired by what he experienced and tasted in Melbourne. Not only at MICE but at the range of espresso bars he stopped by during his trip. A design-junky at heart, Simon and his wife, architect Belinda Tuohy, loved the simplicity and scale of the espresso bars they found, often tucked in the bottom of buildings or down laneways.  He even kept a notebook of beautiful sketches of his favourite places.

Liaison Café in Little Collins St was just around the corner from where the couple was staying, so they became regulars. Simon drooled over the single group Slayer coffee machine ...

MICE, the Melbourne International Coffee Expo was one full day of coffee-sensory-overload. Simon said he felt both inspired and intimidated, "It was overwhelmingly amazing!". In particular he was impressed by the aesthetics of the coffee scene, "So stylish, the branding in Melbourne seems much slicker than what we see in New Zealand".

The expo including everything from latte art to roasting champs. Simon was taken by the i-milk dispenser, "very beautiful" but unfortunately has a milk bladder we can’t get in New Zealand.

And the cups! So many gorgeous take-out cups!
